TAFSIR: ITS HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTICS FROM THE PROPHETIC ERA TO THE PRESENT DAY
Abstract
This book offers a comprehensive analytical study of the history and characteristics of Qur'anic exegesis (Tafsir) from the Prophetic era to the present day, intentionally bypassing the theoretical debate between "Tafsir" and "Ta’wil" to focus on the practical development of the discipline. Employing historical, descriptive, comparative, and deductive methodologies, the author traces the evolution of Tafsir across fifteen Islamic centuries, highlighting its distinct features in each period. The book critiques prior partial studies, such as those by Qasim Al-Qaysi, Al-Dhahabi, Al-Sharbasī, and Abdel Moneim Al-Nimr, for lacking a comprehensive historical approach, noting that most focus on exegetical methods rather than historical progression. Divided into two main sections, the theoretical part examines the origins, types, and foundational sciences of Tafsir, while the applied section analyzes its development century by century. The author argues for Tafsir as a product of Qur’anic sciences but deserving of standalone historical study. This work contributes significantly to Qur’anic scholarship and invites broader encyclopedic research in the field.
